Classical Education

The classical curriculum model follows a three-step process, “the trivium,” to provide students the tools they need for intellectual development.

Grammar Stage”: In the earlier grades (K-5), students absorb facts which provide the foundation for later study. They learn mastery of basic facts and information of various academic subjects, learn to read and love the written word.

Logic Stage”: In the middle grades (6-8), students learn the principles of reason and logic. They are now ready to think more abstractly and make connections between facts they have already learned.

Rhetoric Stage”: In the high school years (9-12), students are now equipped to express themselves effectively through the written and spoken word, make their own conclusions, and therefore pursue any calling thereafter.

Students learn history in chronological order. Other subjects, such as science, literature and art follow the time period of the particular history section studied. This interdisciplinary approach allows students to make more connections between the subjects. In addition, the history is taught in four year cycles, repeating the history 3 times. Each time the history, and the corresponding literature and science, is repeated, students are at a different developmental level and therefore have a deeper understanding each time.

The classical curriculum gives students a broad perspective of the world and world history. Understanding past world events puts our students at an advantage. The interdisciplinary aspect is also fundamental for students to achieve. Learning a period of history, in addition to the scientific discoveries of the time, the literature, art and music makes a very rich educational experience.

The organization provided by the classical model provides a structure for students to develop and grow at each level, culminating in a student who has learned how to think and learn independently, not simply learned concepts.
